Dutch composer and conductor Johan de Meij (Voorburg, 1953) received his musical training at the Royal Conservatory of Music in The Hague, where he studied trombone and conducting. His award-winning oeuvre of original compositions, symphonic transcriptions and film scores has garnered him international acclaim and have become permanent fixtures in the repertoire of renowned ensembles globally.

About Johan de Meij

Johan de Meij is a Dutch composer, conductor, and arranger of international acclaim with an impressive catalog of original compositions and symphonic transcriptions spanning back to 1979. He received his musical training at the Royal Conservatory of the Hague, during which time he developed his skills as a conductor, as well as playing both the trombone and euphonium.

Since these formative years, de Meij has achieved noteworthy success as a soloist. He has also ascended the podium to champion the genre of wind music, conducting a plethora of leading ensembles across the globe. He was appointed as principal guest conductor of the Simón Bolívar Youth Wind Orchestra in 2010 and both The New York Wind Symphony and Japan’s Kyushu Wind Orchestra in 2014.

De Meij’s musical catalog is striking and eclectic. encompassing arrangements of Shostakovich and Beethoven, vivid cinematic re-imaginings, and works that incorporate both traditional and folk music from across Europe. Though a firm promoter of wind music, he views himself as a symphonic composer, with the classic symphony orchestra providing the core guideline for his work.

De Meij’s work has received of several prominent awards throughout his career. The first of his five existing symphonies, titled ‘The Lord of the Rings’, won the Sudler Composition Award in 1989, with his third, titled ‘Planet Earth’, winning second place in the 2006 Corciano Competition. This work achieved further recognition and praise in 2022 when it was adapted into a short film titled ‘CineSymphony: Planet Earth’, receiving the award for Best Feature Film at the Environmental Film & Screenplay Festival 2022. De Meij’s distinguished body of work continues to reach listeners through the publishing company Amstel Music, of which he is founder and CEO. He is also a much sought-after lecturer and educator.
