CineSymphony: Planet Earth

Dutch composer, conductor, and arranger Johan de Meij’s award-winning ‘Planet Earth’ stands as an exceptional piece of music. The one-of-a-kind symphony - the first that De Meij composed directly for a symphony orchestra - is brought to life by the extraordinary North Netherlands Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Otto Tausk.

The audience is whisked away on a journey through various musical landscapes, inspired by the beautiful diversity of our planet. Visually, this stunning piece is matched with beautiful visuals produced by Dyan Machan and directed by Jed Parker.

About Planet Earth

When it comes to Johan de Meij’s unique third symphony ‘Planet Earth’, one might at once recall, thematically speaking, Gustav Holst’s ‘The Planets’. However, unlike his English counterpart, De Meij does not forsake our most familiar planet - our own.

As the work’s title suggests, the three-movement symphony spotlights Earth’s beauty, diversity, and fragility. Each of the work’s distinct sections within these movements symbolizes a particular aspect of our planet; ‘Aqua’, ‘Terra’, ‘Wind’, ‘The Human Planet’, and ‘Finale: Hymn’.

Proving once again his unique talent at sketching vivid musical landscapes on the stage, De Meij channels the oceans, the land, the wind’s twists and turns, the breeze, storms, and climate fluctuations effortlessly.

However, De Meij’s ‘Planet Earth’ does not only wax poetic. Over a century after Holst paid tribute to the planets in outer space, it is more pertinent than ever to turn our attention to our own - something that De Meij understood nearly two decades ago.

The symphony’s fourth section, ‘The Human Planet’, delves into humanity’s destructive impact on Earth, touching upon topics such as industrialization, urbanization, and the environment. As the looming threat of climate collapse magnifies itself and floods us with increasingly worrying headlines, the composer’s earth-centric piece provides a sense of catharsis.

Still, amid the darkness, light finds a way in; the symphony finishes with ‘Finale: Hymn’, and the chime of bells brings forth a hopeful hymn finale calling for the preservation of our beautiful ‘Planet Earth’.
