Münchner Philharmoniker

The Münchner Philharmoniker, established in 1893, has been a major contributor to the musical scene in Munich under the direction of renowned conductors. Notably, Gustav Mahler conducted the orchestra in the world premieres of his 4th and 8th symphonies. Ferdinand Löwe established the orchestra's Bruckner tradition, and Siegmund von Hausegger and Oswald von Kabasta gloriously continued it.

About Münchner Philharmoniker

The orchestra's international reputation was boosted by the legendary Bruckner concerts with general music director Sergiu Celibidache during the Rudolf Kempe era. Zubin Mehta was the first "conductor laureate" in the orchestra's history. Chief conductor Christian Thielemann conducted two performances of Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 8 in Munich for the 100th anniversary of its premiere.

From 2015 to 2022, Valery Gergiev held the position of chief conductor of the Münchner Philharmoniker, during which the orchestra recorded all of Anton Bruckner's symphonies in the basilica of St. Florian Monastery. The orchestra also introduced new formats, such as the "MPHIL 360°" festival, and released CD recordings under its own label, "MPHIL." The Münchner Philharmoniker has a comprehensive music education program called "Spielfeld Klassik," which caters to people of all ages.

In October 2021, the Münchner Philharmoniker inaugurated the Isarphilharmonie, its new home and concert hall, while the Gasteig is being renovated. With its new motto, "Being approachable and breaking new ground," the orchestra plans to expand its festival program and create new points of access for audiences with formats such as "mphil late," "NACHtKLANG," and "Wandelkonzerte" to be held regularly. The Münchner Philharmoniker is committed to enriching the musical scene in Munich and the world under the leadership of its chief conductors.
